In recent years the safety of railway systems has become an important requirement for the society in where we live. The clamour raised by a single railway accident is higher than that raised by the innumerable serious accidents occurring daily involving automobiles.
Large amounts of money have been invested in transportation safety, and in particular for railway signalling systems. Notwithstanding these investments, the problem of obstacles on railway lines is still not solved.
Railway accidents can be caused by accidental falling of objects onto the railway lines.
The problem related to obstacle detection is much more important for high-speed lines, where the time available to the Railway System Authority for braking the train is reduced to a minimum and in extreme
circumstances can be non-existent. To solve the problem related to the presence of obstacles on the railway lines, Intecs has developed a product called SIRIO.
SIRIO is an automatic system for the detection of targets along the railway lines. It consists of a remote control system and many peripheral boards that are so-called SIRIO nodes. These nodes have been designed to be installed close to bridges over the railway or to the entrance of tunnels, where dangerous obstacles could fall on the tracks below, due to landslides or accidents.
A SIRIO node is composed by four Radar Sensors developed by IDS (Ingegneria Dei Sistemi Italy), four reference reflectors and one outdoor cabinet containing all the needed electronic equipment.

The target detection is done by multi-beam radar sensors without any use of mechanical moving parts. As a result, a high MTBF value is obtained.
Each SIRIO node is able to signal a target detection directly by means of its outputs without the remote control system support: a node can be connected directly to the central signal system.
This system can detect a train in transit or stopped in the monitored area without generating a false alarm confusing the train with an obstacle.
All of the errors and auto-diagnosis results are stored in a non-volatile memory. The information stored in the non-volatile memory is provided to the operator both by using a special program installed on an external PC or laptop connected to the system through an RS-232 interface or via remote control system.
The remote control system has a GUI (Graphical User Interface) to monitor the status of the nodes.

An optional video system (day and night) is also available that is able to record video of the monitored area. The video functionality can be activated mainly in the following way:
 

  • By means of an explicit command from the remote control system;

  •  Automatically when obstacle detection occurs.

The acquired images are stored locally in a digital video recorder and can be downloaded by the remote control system.
It is also possible to start automatically a real time video streaming when obstacle detection occurs. SIRIO has been developed according the EN 50129 and EN 50128 standards for SIL4 applications.
The SIL4 level is achieved using different techniques: multi-beam and redundant sensors, use of reference target, complex signal processing algorithm and sophisticated self-test procedures (HW-SW).
